UNSC Election: India has taken a big step to establish its influence in the world’s biggest forum i.e. the United Nations (UN). India has started its official campaign to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the year 2028-29.
Jaishankar started the campaign
In a special program organized in New York, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar started this campaign named ‘SHANTI’ (Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity). On this occasion, senior officials and diplomats from many countries around the world were present. During this, Jaishankar made it clear that India does not just talk about “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the whole world is one family), but also actually practices it.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted key examples at the United Nations which prove that India is a strong pillar of peace and security across the world. He said that the Indian Navy is protecting important sea lanes like the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Strait of Malacca and Gulf of Guinea. India is continuously running major campaigns against piracy, drugs and human trafficking.
Jaishankar further said that today India is providing training and capacity building facilities to soldiers of 98 countries of the world in the United Nations Peacekeeping Center (CUNPK) built in Delhi. During the ‘Ditwa’ cyclone in Sri Lanka and the ‘Melissa’ cyclone in Jamaica, India first moved forward and provided relief material and saved people’s lives.
He said that India has sent life-saving medicines and vaccines to countries like Afghanistan, Tanzania, Madagascar, Maldives, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. In addition, provided medical assistance to stop the Ebola virus in Africa. At the same time, it helped countries like Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Malawi by providing food grains during the food crisis.
The External Affairs Minister stressed that India has always been raising the concerns of developing countries on the global platform. It was due to India’s efforts that the African Union was made a permanent member of G20. Today India has development partnerships with more than 100 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Actually, elections for this period of 2028-29 are to be held in June next year. Interestingly, this time there will be a direct contest between India and Tajikistan for the only seat in the Asia-Pacific group. India has made it clear that its vision towards the United Nations is based on ‘peace’ and overall development, which will further strengthen global trust.
Jaishankar met UN Secretary General
Under this mission, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has also met United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Before reaching New York, he was on a tour of Gulf countries like Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Soon after, on July 14-15, he will attend the 3rd India-European Union (EU) Trade and Technology Council meeting in Brussels, where he will meet his counterparts from the EU and Belgium to strengthen bilateral relations.
This campaign has started at a time when the geopolitics of the entire world is changing rapidly due to Ukraine war, Gaza conflict and increasing military tension in the Middle East.
Recently, while addressing the Parliament of Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also emphasized that in the changing times, developing countries should get equal rights in global decisions. He had said that the 15-member Security Council formed in 1945 does not match the realities of today’s 21st century.
