Now China’s entry in Iran-Israel war! | Image:Republic
In an important diplomatic move amid the deepening crisis in West Asia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi on March 2. In this conversation, he assured Tehran of Beijing’s strong support and gave a hidden warning to America and Israel.
The call came as tensions rose following new US military strikes on Iranian targets, which Tehran has described as a second war triggered by ongoing talks.
China supported Iran’s sovereignty
According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, Araghchi briefed Wang on new developments in Iran, and accused Washington of breaking international law and crossing Tehran’s red line, while calling it positive progress in their recent talks.
Araghchi told Wang that Iran “has no choice but to defend itself at all costs”, adding that he hoped China would continue to play an active role in preventing further regional tensions.
Wang Yi reiterated China’s “point of principle”, and stressed that Beijing values its traditional friendship with Tehran and supports Iran in safeguarding Iran’s sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and national honor. He also reaffirmed China’s support for Iran’s “legitimate and legitimate rights and interests.”
Demand for immediate ceasefire
Wang appealed to the US and Israel to immediately end military action to prevent the conflict from spreading to the Middle East. China’s Foreign Ministry further said that US and Israeli military operations in Iran risk escalating the conflict and stressed the need to respect Iran’s territorial sovereignty. Although Beijing did not directly threaten action, the language was harsher than previous statements. China has consistently described itself as an advocate of reducing aggression in West Asia.
Emphasis on safety of Chinese citizens
Amid the unstable situation, Wang also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Iran. He expressed confidence that Tehran will maintain national and social stability while addressing the concerns of neighboring countries. In response, Araghchi assured that Iran will do its best to guarantee the security of Chinese people and property.
The talks reflect Beijing’s growing involvement in West Asian geopolitics at a time of growing confrontation between Washington and Tehran. China has appealed for dialogue and restraint in the past as well, but the new developments indicate its tough stance against unilateral military action. With tensions rising in the region and fear of a major conflict, China’s diplomatic intervention signals that the crisis is no longer limited to regional ones, but has taken on larger geopolitical dimensions.
