US President Donald Trump had claimed that Iran is trying to make nuclear weapons. Trump has repeatedly stressed that his policy has been to never allow Iran to get nuclear weapons. Now International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has clarified that no evidence of making a nuclear bomb has been found in Iran’s nuclear program.
However, Rafael Grossi described the lack of cooperation from Iran as a matter of serious concern. He clarified that Iran’s stockpile of nuclear-grade uranium is a matter of concern. He further said that unless Iran cooperates with the IAEA to resolve outstanding security issues, the agency cannot assure that Iran’s nuclear program is completely peaceful.
In a post on X, Rafael Grossi said that I have been very clear in my reports on Iran’s nuclear program. Although there is no evidence that Iran has made a nuclear bomb, its huge stockpile of highly enriched uranium and its refusal to grant full access to inspectors is a matter of grave concern.
No signs of making nuclear weapons
Earlier, in an interview, Grossi had said that the IAEA had no indication of any systematic program to produce nuclear weapons. However, there were several aspects which were a matter of serious concern. “While there are concerns about large uranium reserves, lack of transparency and obstruction in inspections, we have no information that Iran will build a bomb tomorrow or the day after,” he said. He stressed that the IAEA does not judge intentions but is based on facts.
This statement has come at a time when tension is at its peak in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump and other officials have accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, but the IAEA’s findings differ. Trump had said that if action was not taken, Iran would have acquired nuclear weapons.
According to the IAEA chief, Iran’s accumulation of near weapons-grade uranium is worrying, but there does not appear to be any systematic process of bomb manufacturing. Due to lack of cooperation the agency is not able to do complete verification.
Today is the fifth day of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Attacks on Iran by the US and Israel killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and other prominent figures of the Persian Gulf country. In retaliation, Tehran has launched retaliatory strikes targeting US military bases and Israeli assets.
