Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly raised the issue of Indian sailors killed in the American attack near Oman at the ongoing G7 Summit in Evian, France. PM Modi expressed concern over the tragic death of Indian sailors killed in the US military attack. When PM Modi was giving his speech at the outreach session of the G7 Summit, US President Donald Trump was sitting next to him.
In the presence of President Donald Trump, PM Modi stressed on strengthening the security of sailors. Referring to the huge humanitarian and economic loss caused by instability in the Strait of Hormuz, the Prime Minister stressed the security of international maritime trade routes. On the Iran-US peace deal, PM Modi said, “We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia.”
Many Indians lost their lives – PM Modi
Speaking on the topic of building new partnerships and reestablishing international solidarity, PM Modi said, the disruption of maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz due to the Middle East conflict has harmed the global economy. Barriers to maritime trade have adversely affected the global economy. Modi also said that many Indians have lost their lives in the Middle East conflict.
What did PM Modi say on the safety of sailors?
PM Modi has raised the issue of death of Indian sailors in the American attack near Oman in the summit. In the presence of Trump, PM Modi stressed on strengthening global shipping and the safety of seafarers. The Prime Minister stressed, “The safety of seafarers, who connect all countries through global maritime trade, is our responsibility. We have to ensure that the sea lanes remain safe and seafarers can go about their business without any fear.”
Indian sailors lost their lives in the American army attack
At the G7 summit, Prime Minister Modi tried to focus attention on global maritime security by raising the issue on the international platform. The attack that PM Modi referred to was on a ship in the Gulf of Oman, in which three Indian citizens were killed after the Palau-flagged oil tanker ‘Settebello’ was targeted by the US military.
There were crew members from many countries on board the ship
The ship had a crew of 28 people, which included 24 Indians, two Pakistanis, one Ukrainian and one Russian. It was stopped and attacked by the US military due to alleged violation of the US blockade while carrying oil from Iran. ‘Setebello’ is one of the three merchant ships whose Indian crew members have been stranded in recent regional maritime incidents.
PM Modi stressed on mutual trust in G7 summit
During his address, PM Modi also said that the most important strategic asset is not minerals, technology or markets, but mutual trust. But the trust built over decades and the contribution of many generations is weakening today. Covid has shown us how hollow the claims of trust and solidarity were. Today the world is struggling not with lack of resources but with lack of trust. Noting that the future of partnerships depends on building this trust, PM Modi referred to US President Ronald Reagan’s statement – “Trust but verify.”
