The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil transportation route. It is a narrow sea route located between Iran and Oman. In normal times, about 20 percent of the world’s total oil production passes through this route. If this route is closed or disrupted, oil prices across the world could skyrocket.
US President Donald Trump has been pressurizing Iran for the last several months so that this waterway is completely opened. They have used air strikes, naval blockade, negotiations and strong threats. According to Trump, America has caused significant damage to Iran’s military capabilities in just a few months.
Trump said that America is again imposing blockade on Iran’s ports. He also said ships may have to pay a fee for safe passage and claimed the Strait of Hormuz is open and will remain open.
Iran’s claim
On the other hand, Iran has clearly stated that it will oppose any US intervention and it has control over the strait. There have been several minor skirmishes between the two sides over the past week, including airstrikes and naval actions. These clashes sometimes stop and sometimes intensify, due to which there is a danger of full-scale war.
Why is it difficult for America?
Iran had been preparing for such a conflict for decades. Its strategy is based on asymmetric warfare, i.e. small but effective attacks. This includes hiding drones and missiles, laying mines in the sea, scaring ships even by just giving threats on the radio and using their vast territory.
Experts believe that it is very difficult to completely secure this strait without ground troops. The US Navy would have to deploy larger numbers of ships for longer periods of time, which increases the risk and potential for loss.

Currently most commercial ships are avoiding the traditional route. They are passing through the southern route along the coast of Oman, where American drones and aircraft are keeping surveillance.
