Tremors felt in Sumatra island
After the sudden earthquake, people in many areas came out of their homes and offices. Indonesia is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic events. Additionally, the Sumatra region of Indonesia lies along a major tectonic collision zone that extends for more than 8,000 kilometers, where multiple tectonic plates meet.
It is a matter of relief that till now there has been no official confirmation of any major loss of life or property or any casualty. At the local level, people took to the streets in panic in some areas, but there was no news of any large-scale destruction. Relief and rescue teams are monitoring the situation. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and other agencies have so far ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.
