Off the coast of Oman, a chemical tanker with 12 Indian crew members was attacked by the Iranian Coast Guard. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said on Monday that the incident occurred on April 25, involving the Togo-flagged ship MT Siron, near the border with the port of Shinas.
Speaking at a press briefing, Mandeep Singh Randhawa, Director, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said, “On April 25, 2026, an incident was reported involving a Togo-flagged chemical tanker, MT Siron, with Indian crew members on board. The incident occurred near the outer limits of the port at Shinas, Oman.”
Randhawa further said that the ship was moving along with other ships when the coast guard fired warning shots. All the Indian crew members on board the ship are said to be safe.
‘Monitoring the situation closely’
The shipping ministry further said it is maintaining coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Indian missions and all other concerned parties, and is closely monitoring the situation.
He further said, “The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions and maritime domain parties, and is fully committed to ensuring the safety of the crew and maritime activities. All Indian seafarers present in the region are safe.”
Firing on Indian flagged ships
In recent days, the IRGC had fired on two other Indian ships, the VLCC Sanmar Herald and Jag Arnav. This incident happened when both these ships were trying to cross the ‘Strait of Hormuz’, after which India had lodged a strong protest against this incident.
