The navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has turned back a container ship bound for Pakistan in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pakistani ship has been identified as ‘Selene’ (IMO: 9208459). It was going towards Karachi when it was stopped and its route was changed. According to officials, the ship did not have the necessary clearance to pass through this important sea route.
IRGC chased away Pakistani ship from Hormuz
Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, confirmed this on the social media platform X. “The container ship SELEN has been turned away by IRGC Naval Forces for not following legal protocols and not having permission to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” he wrote.
According to reports, the ship had departed from Sharjah Anchorage in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on March 23 and was heading towards Karachi. AIS tracking data shows the ship suddenly turned around upon reaching the entrance to Hormuz and headed back towards the Persian Gulf. The IRGC Navy stopped it and did not allow it to proceed, calling it a violation of protocol.
Amid rising tensions between Iran, the US and Israel, Iran has clarified that “for any ship to pass through this sea route, full coordination with the maritime authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran is necessary.” The IRGC said the ship did not have the necessary clearance. This ship, flying the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis, is a container ship, whose length is 118.27 meters and width is 18.14 meters. It was to reach Karachi on 28 March.
