Iranian authorities have announced plans to hold a three-day public funeral for former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to state media reports. Khamenei died on February 28, the first day of the US-Israeli war against Iran. Tehran’s Deputy Mayor Mohammad Amin Tavakoli-Zadeh presented the outline of administrative arrangements for these commemorative events to be held in several cities.

Who announced Khamenei’s funeral?

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB quoted Tavakoli-Zadeh as saying that preparations for the farewell ceremony, funeral procession and burial of the “martyred imam” have been completed. Scheduled memorial processions will be held in several major urban centres, including the capital Tehran as well as religious centers such as Qom and Mashhad. The main ceremonial events in Tehran alone are expected to last at least 24 hours.

The formal announcement comes several months after the death of Iran’s longtime ruler Khamenei. Although conservative Islamic traditions require that burials and funerals normally take place within a few days of death, Iranian authorities had previously decided to postpone funerals indefinitely.

It did not announce the exact date of the funeral, but indicated it could take place at the beginning of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which falls in mid-June. Around two crore people are expected to attend the funeral. The venue of the final event has also yet to be decided. According to sources, the two possible places for this are Tehran’s Musalla (Grand Prayers Hall) and the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
