According to political sources and local media reports, there is a strong possibility of Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigning soon, while there are still about two years left for his five-year term to end. It is being seen as the last symbol of the Sheikh Hasina era. Shahabuddin, who assumed office in April 2023, is the only constitutional functionary of the previous Awami League government to retain his position even after the massive student protests in July-August 2024.

According to the report of Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, the biggest reason for the possible resignation of President Shahabuddin is his alleged phone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit to London in the month of May. The report claims that the information about this confidential conversation reached the intelligence agencies, after which a message was given to the President from high level to step down from the post.
Punishment for talking to Sheikh Hasina on phone
At the same time, quoting another Bangladeshi newspaper Pratham Aalo, a senior government source said that Shahabuddin had recently tried to contact Hasina again. The ruling coalition is extremely angry with this move. In the last two days, speculations regarding his resignation have increased. Shahabuddin was appointed to the post of President during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Former PM expressed his desire to return to the country
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country after massive protests by students in July-August 2024. Earlier this month, Haseena had said that she wanted to return home before the year ends. The Bangladesh government responded that it welcomed their return, but added that they would face legal proceedings.
Expressing her desire to return to her country, Sheikh Hasina had said that she knew that if she returned to the country, she would be sent to jail and could even be hanged, but despite these risks, she had decided to return to her country.
