The US Embassy located in Iraq’s capital Baghdad was once again attacked on Wednesday morning. Two Iraqi security officials told news agency AP on condition of anonymity that the US embassy compound in Baghdad was targeted early Wednesday.
According to officials, the interior of the embassy was targeted in this attack. The C-RAM defense system protecting the embassy could not stop this attack. This system tries to destroy the incoming rocket, cannon or mortar by firing 20 mm bullets, but this time it could not happen.
At present no further information has been received about this attack. Till the time of writing this news, no official statement has been issued by the US State Department.
The US Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone was also attacked with drones and rockets on Tuesday morning. The C-RAM defense system was able to intercept two drones, but the third fell into the compound, causing fire and smoke. After this, Iraqi security forces increased deployment in many parts of the capital and sealed the Green Zone located at the embassy.
C-RAM (Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar) is an advanced air defense system of the US military, primarily designed to destroy low-altitude threats such as rockets, artillery shells, mortars, and sometimes drones in the air. It is a version of the land-based Phalanx, which was originally used to protect ships from missiles. It is fitted with a 20 mm M61A1 Vulcan Gatling gun, which is capable of firing at a rate of 4,500 rounds per minute.
Its radar and sensors detect and track incoming projectiles. The system itself assesses the threat and fires automatically. Every fifth round is a tracer, which shows a line of fire.
Let us tell you that after the attacks on Iran by America and Israel, attacks on American targets in Iraq have increased. Iran or Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups have often carried out such attacks. The US Embassy has already been the target of such attacks.
