There was a sudden commotion in America’s defense headquarters Pentagon on Thursday. Sensors installed inside the building detected something unusual in the air quality, after which the entire system went on alert. After this, the rescue teams immediately reached the spot wearing gas masks and protective gear.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, many floors of the building have been evacuated, some parts of the Pentagon have been sealed. Special teams were called to investigate hazardous materials.
The incident occurred around noon during work time. The building’s internal alert system immediately issued a warning. Within minutes the corridors were closed and the movement of people on the affected floors was stopped.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department has begun its normal security procedures. A stay-in order has been issued for the affected area. Response teams are present and fully prepared to assist those working in the building.
In the notice sent to the staff, it was clearly described as an air quality issue. It was written in the notice that additional investigation may take 1 to 2 hours. Employees were asked not to speculate about the teams and activities seen outside.
According to CNN and US officials, sensors inside the building indicated potential danger, prompting emergency protocols, which are usually only implemented in serious incidents. The employees present on the premises were asked to remain there.
Most used parts affected
The area of corridors 4 to 7 of floors 2 to 5 of the Pentagon was locked down. These parts are the most heavily used areas of the building. Many floors have been evacuated. Corridors were closed and movement was completely stopped. This action was taken purely as a precaution. No harmful substances have been confirmed yet.
