North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has said that America’s war with Iran proves that his country had made the right decision to keep its nuclear weapons.
In a speech to North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly, Kim accused the US of “state-sponsored terrorism and acts of aggression”.
“The current situation clearly proves that North Korea was right to reject US pressure and sweet talks to give up its nuclear weapons,” he said, adding that North Korea’s nuclear situation is now “irreversible”.
‘Trump cannot clash with North Korea’
For North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, the Iran war reinforces the old notion that countries that do not have nuclear weapons are vulnerable to America’s military power, while those that do have them can deter America.
The timing of Kim’s speech is very important. Trump has recently indicated that he is ready to resume talks with Kim, which could reopen the path to diplomatic talks that broke down in 2019.
‘America should accept North Korea as a nuclear power’
Kim’s latest comments suggest that any future meeting will be quite different from previous summits, whose main focus was on denuclearization. He has indicated that he is willing to talk again with Trump, but only if the US accepts North Korea as a nuclear power.
Kim’s nuclear weapons can reach anywhere in America
It is generally believed that North Korea has prepared dozens of nuclear weapons (warheads). Unlike Iran or Venezuela, North Korea claims to have operational nuclear weapons and delivery systems capable of reaching anywhere in the US mainland, although these weapons have not yet been fully tested.
