India at UN: India again raised questions on the world’s dual attitude towards the issue of terrorism. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations P. Harish said that a terrorist is just a terrorist – there is no good or bad in it. He stressed that terrorism cannot be justified on the basis of any pretext, grievance or political interest.
India presented its stand during the adoption of the 9th review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy at the UN. P. Harish gave a clear message on behalf of India in the UN that the world should now completely abandon the thinking of ‘good and bad terrorists’. Our people have lost their lives due to terrorism. This led to India’s stance that terrorism should not be tolerated at any cost.
What did India demand?
P. Harish said that India had demanded the adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) in the year 2006. Adoption of this treaty is necessary so that terrorists and their supporters do not get easy access to safe havens, funding and weapons. Now is the time for all countries to show political will to implement CCIT.
India has placed some key priorities against terrorism in the United Nations. The international community must completely eliminate double standards in counter-terrorism. It is the responsibility of every country to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of terrorism accountable and punish them. All member countries should give full cooperation in this.
‘It is necessary to effectively implement FATF standards’
Apart from this, it was also said that combating the funding of terrorism should be the center of our collective fight. There should be increased exchange of financial intelligence and strict enforcement of FATF standards to ensure that no region becomes a safe haven for terror funding.
He said terrorist organizations are misusing new emerging technologies, such as encrypted communications, drones, autonomous weapons, social media, online radicalization, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, virtual assets and the dark web. There is a need to immediately prepare effective regulation and security framework against these.
P. Harish also said that providing justice to the victims of terrorism should be our biggest priority. International efforts must be strengthened to give them dignity, voice and proper rehabilitation.
PM Modi’s message repeated
He also further said that lack of international cooperation against terrorism could have serious consequences. During this, India also reiterated the message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United Nations, in which he had said, “Terrorism anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere.”
India called upon the entire world that any kind of ambiguity cannot be tolerated in the matter of terrorism. Victims of terrorism deserve justice and future generations have the right to a secure and peaceful future. The United Nations General Assembly should play a leadership role in this regard.
