Bangladesh news: Before the elections in Bangladesh, Hindu leader and former Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen has died in jail. It is being told that 85 year old Sen was ill for a long time. It is being told that he was brought from Dinajpur District Jail to the Emergency Department of the Medical College Hospital at 9:10 am on Saturday (February 7), where the doctors declared him dead. His death is being seen as custodial death and many people are also raising questions on the Yunus government.
Ramesh Chandra Sen was a senior leader of Awami League. He has been MP five times. He had also won the last election in the year 2024. He has also worked as a minister in Sheikh Hasina government.
Allegations regarding the case are that he was not being looked after well in jail, as a former minister should have been treated. At the time of Ramesh Chandra Sen’s arrest in August 2024, pictures went viral on social media, in which his hands were seen tied with ropes. Three different cases were pending against him, including a case related to murder.
Bangladeshi Awami League raised questions
On the death of Ramesh Chandra Sen, a post from the Prisons are being used as a secret weapon to eliminate political opponents.
The post further said that the jail authorities have declared it a “natural death”, but the reality is completely different. An 83-year-old former minister detained in a serious case was not provided advanced medical care. This is not just a failure of the state. This is a clear case of willful negligence. Custodial torture after arrest, denial of adequate medical treatment, sudden deterioration in health and declaration of death within minutes, all these things together raise a worrying question. Was it really an accident, or another chapter in a continuing pattern of political vendetta?
General elections are to be held in Bangladesh on 12 February 2026. Earlier, in the last few months, many incidents of violence against minority communities (especially Hindus) have come to light in the neighboring country. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024, cases are being continuously filed against Awami League leaders. Awami League’s political activities have been banned and Awami League has been barred from participating in Bangladesh elections.
