Donald Trump on Netanyahu: There was an uproar over a statement by New York Mayor Zoharan Mamdani, in which he talked about arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Now there has been a sharp reaction from US President Donald Trump on this. He made it clear that Netanyahu cannot be arrested under any circumstances.
Actually, Netanyahu is going to visit America in September. He has to participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Zoharan Mamdani said that when Netanyahu visits New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly, every possible effort will be made to arrest him.
Trump’s reaction to Mamdani’s statement
While sharing a post on Truth Social, Trump clarified, “Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested in any way while he is in America. He is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which recently killed 52,000 innocent protesters and has been killing American soldiers and others for the last 47 years.”
He further said that those who pushed Iran into this unprecedented period of death and destruction should be arrested. A situation that previous presidents should have dealt with years ago.
What did Mamdani say?
In an interview, Mamdani said that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu comes to New York, could he be arrested – a topic the city’s legal department is seriously considering. He believes that it is very important to fix accountability for the serious incidents that took place during the Gaza War and people around the world are unanimous on this. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu on war crimes charges, so his rightful place is in The Hague (the headquarters of the ICC).
However, he also made it completely clear that the New York administration will work only within the ambit of the law. Before taking any action, it is being thoroughly investigated whether New York has the constitutional and legal right to take such action.
Israeli ambassador’s counterattack
Israeli Ambassador to America Mike Waltz hit back at Mamdani’s statement. He said that the intention of arresting Netanyahu will never be fulfilled. He gave 4 big legal reasons behind this.
He clarified that the US is not a part of the ‘Rome Statue’, which comes under the International Criminal Court (ICC). In addition, foreign heads of government visiting the United States enjoy full diplomatic protection under the UN Headquarters Agreement and Head of State Immunity. Waltz also stressed that in the US, federal laws (federal authority) supersede the wishes of any local mayor or city administration, so such action is legally impossible.
