At the most dangerous juncture of the Russia-Ukraine war, when the fear of a nuclear attack was scaring the world, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi played an important role. Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski has recently claimed that on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin had stopped the use of tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine at the end of 2022.

Bartoszewski clearly said in an interview that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders whose words Putin takes seriously. He said Modi’s advice helped convince Putin that using nuclear weapons would be a wrong decision.

According to the Poland Minister, Modi’s talk holds special significance because of India’s non-alignment policy and decades-old strong ties with Russia. The appeal of countries that do not consider Russia an enemy has more impact.

relations between india and russia

Relations between India and Russia have been deep since the Soviet era. India never considered Russia as its adversary. This is the reason why when many countries of the world were putting pressure on Russia, Putin listened carefully and accepted Modi’s advice.

Bartoszewski also said that only leaders like Modi can put some pressure on Putin and help stop the war. Praising India’s peace efforts, he said that India’s role was important in preventing this conflict from becoming more catastrophic.

Putin also praised Modi

Recently Putin himself praised India’s independent foreign policy. He had said that efforts to put pressure on Modi and India are harmful for international relations and Russia did not suffer any loss from it. Putin clarified that India is building relations with all countries according to its national interests.

Statement on oil purchases from Russia

Poland had earlier criticized India’s buying of cheap oil from Russia, as it was helping Russia’s war economy. But now Bartoszewski said he understood India’s economic reasons, Russian oil was being sold about 40 percent cheaper than the market price. Poland now understands this need of India.

Let us tell you, the Modi government has appealed to both sides for dialogue and restraint since the beginning of the war. India neither fully supported Russia nor came under pressure from Western countries. Countries like Poland, which are close to Ukraine, are now accepting this role of India wholeheartedly. This shows that India’s credibility and influence is increasing at the global level.
