The leaders of Pakistan do not desist from their cheap statements. On one hand the people are in need of daily bread and on the other hand Pakistani leaders are giving nuclear threats to India. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has once again given a sharp statement against India.
He has threatened India with a nuclear response regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. This statement was made at an international seminar organized in Islamabad, where Bilawal described the Indus River as the lifeline of Pakistan.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made this controversial statement while speaking at an international seminar organized in Islamabad on Indus Water Treaty. He said it is part of Pakistan’s official nuclear policy that if Pakistan’s economy is blockaded or its waterways are blocked, it is one of the rare cases that could trigger a nuclear response. Bilawal Bhutto stressed that postponing the Indus Water Treaty is playing with Pakistan’s security.
India postponed Indus Water Treaty
India had suspended the Indus Water Treaty in April 2025 after the Pahalgam terror attack. India says the treaty will remain suspended until concrete action is taken on terrorism in Pakistan. Pakistan is calling it illegal and is talking about taking legal action.
This is not the first such statement of Bilawal. Earlier too he had warned of war against India over steps like building dams on the Indus. The Pakistani Army Chief and other leaders have also made nuclear threats from time to time.
This statement is going to further increase the tension between the two countries. The Indus Water Treaty of 1960, brokered by the World Bank, is the basis for water sharing between India and Pakistan. This 1960 agreement, brokered by the World Bank, divides the waters of the Indus River and its tributaries. India had complete control over the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, while Pakistan got its main water from the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, Chenab.
India has clarified that terrorism and water issues are not separate. Such continuously provocative statements from Pakistan also raise questions at the international level. This statement of Bilawal has come at a time when tension continues between India and Pakistan regarding terrorism.
What is Pakistan’s nuclear doctrine?
Nuclear Doctrine or nuclear doctrine is the strategic policy of a country, which decides how it will use nuclear weapons. Pakistan’s official stand is not “no first use”. Unlike India, Pakistan has ruled out ‘no first use’ and has kept open the option of using nuclear weapons first if necessary.
