Two consecutive earthquakes occurred in Venezuela. The second of these earthquakes was of 7.5 magnitude, which is the biggest earthquake in the country in the last hundred years. At least 32 people have died and 700 are injured. Acting President Delsey Rodriguez says the death toll could rise.
Whereas, U.S. The Geological Survey has made a scary estimate. It said there was a 44% chance the death toll from the Venezuela earthquakes would exceed 10,000, and a 30% chance of exceeding 100,000. These data are based on a predictive model.
President Donald Trump assured help to Venezuela in a post on ‘Truth Social’. He said that both the earthquakes were of very large scale and caused the death of a lot of people.
He said, “The United States is ready and willing to help, and able to help! I have directed all agencies of our government to be ready to take swift action. We will stand with our new and good friends. Initial reports are not good!!!”
At the same time, Venezuela’s acting President Delsey Rodriguez said that President Donald Trump and the US government have been in constant contact with Venezuelan officials and have extended support and solidarity to the Venezuelan people. “Venezuela will never forget the help of those who supported our people in difficult times,” he said in a post on Facebook.
Venezuela’s condition is already bad
When the earthquake struck, Venezuela was already struggling with a deep political and economic crisis. An interim government has been operating in the country since President Nicolas Maduro was detained by the US military earlier this year. The impact of this earthquake can put more pressure on the already troubled economy. According to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey, economic losses are likely to be between $10 billion and $100 billion.
