In an interview, US Vice President JD Vance praised his wife Usha Vance. He drew touching parallels between his wife and his late grandmother, whom he affectionately called “Mamav.”
Vance expressed regret that his maternal uncle never met Usha. “They both have some things in common, but they’re also very different,” he said. He told that both the women are very intelligent and straight-talking. While her grandmother dropped out after middle school, Usha completed law school.
Vance said, “They are very outspoken people. I mean, whatever is on Usha’s mind, she says it without thinking.” It was this outspoken style that attracted him towards Usha.
He recalled, “That was one of the things that immediately attracted me to her, that even if what she said might make you feel bad, she would say what was on her mind.”
When Vance told his mother…
Vance, who hails from Ohio, noted the very different backgrounds from which the two most important women in his life came. Mamaw played a key role in his upbringing and was the center of his life for his first 20 years. He said that Usha has become the most important person for the rest of his life.
Vance said warmly, “I wish with all my heart that these two women could have met because they are wonderful people.” He also narrated a funny but interesting story of his mother’s initial reaction when she met Usha. Usha is of Indian origin but was born and raised in America. When Vance told his mother that Usha was Indian, she asked, “What tribe?” This moment shows how, in Vance’s words, “how little some of us knew about the world.”
Usha Vance, a Yale Law School graduate and a successful lawyer, is often cited by her husband as a foundational force in his life and career.
