Pakistani security forces have tried to crush the massive protests in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) demanding economic rights and basic facilities. Many civilians died and hundreds were injured in this violent action.
On this development, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder and leader Altaf Hussain has condemned the use of force by Pakistani security forces. Giving a strong statement, he said that the use of force in Kashmir should be stopped immediately.
Altaf Hussain clarified on the clashes and demonstrations taking place in PoK that the use of weapons to suppress peaceful demands is not acceptable in any civilized society. Targeting the Pakistani army and administration, he said that the problem is not solved by use of force, rather it becomes more serious. Hussain said that injustice has been being done to the people of this area for many decades. He insisted that
“The future of Kashmir should be decided by Kashmiris only.”
Heavy protests have been going on for the last few days in Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch and surrounding areas in different areas of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Pakistan Army is oppressing the protesters. The main demands of the protesters are subsidies on electricity and flour, restoration of political and economic rights and protection of the interests of local people.
The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), formed on these demands, was banned by the Pakistani government under anti-terrorism laws. This was followed by violent clashes between security forces and protesters. According to reports, at least 8-11 people were killed in the police and army action, while dozens were injured. Internet services were shut down and strict action is being taken in the area.
PoK is not a constitutional part of Pakistan
Altaf Hussain claimed regarding PoK that that area is not constitutionally a part of Pakistan. He said, “Kashmir belongs to Kashmiris in principle and now Kashmiris are unanimous that Kashmir will remain theirs.” He further said that the Government of Pakistan itself has said in the Supreme Court that Azad Kashmir is not a part of Pakistan. If this had happened then Pakistan would have had five provinces instead of four.
Hussain alleged that the people of PoK are being deprived of their fundamental rights. Peaceful demonstrations are being crushed with force. Pakistani Rangers, Frontier Corps and other security forces have been deployed to suppress the protests. Internet services have been shut down in many areas, including Rawalakot, curfew has been imposed and restrictions have been imposed on the movement of people. He termed these incidents as “Yazidi atrocities” and demanded Pakistani authorities to immediately end the repression.
