His final farewell ceremonies will be held at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosque on July 4 and 5. After this, a big funeral procession will be taken out in Tehran on 6th July. There will be a funeral procession in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
Family members will also be buried
Finally, on July 9, he will be buried near the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. During this time, his family members will also be buried together with Khamenei.
According to Iranian officials, millions of people from across the country are going to participate in the mourning program. It is estimated that a total of up to 2 crore people can gather in these programs to be organized in different cities. The government and security forces have started special preparations to handle such a large crowd in an organized manner.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a powerful Shia religious scholar, politician and former supreme leader of Iran. He ruled Iran for almost 37 years from 1989 to February 2026. He was one of the longest-serving heads of state in the history of Iran. He was killed in a joint air strike by the US and Israel in Tehran on 28 February 2026. The attacks were targeted at the residence and compound (office) of Ayatollah Khamenei in Tehran. According to Israeli officials, the attack took place at the same place where Iran’s top leaders had gathered.
