Philippines Earthquake: A strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude occurred in the Philippines yesterday (Monday) morning. Due to this, so far 32 people have died while more than 200 are injured. The city of General Santos is said to have suffered the most severe damage after the earthquake. Many buildings were damaged here, a bridge broke and a school building also collapsed. At least 7 deaths occurred and 130 people were injured in this city. There was also loss of life and property in South Cotabato, Davao and Balut Island. Some people were trapped under the debris, while several children were injured during the flag hoisting in the school. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had instructed all agencies to immediately start relief work, while on the spot, injured patients were taken out of hospitals and treated on the road.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea near the island of Mindanao. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 5:07 am Indian time. After the earthquake, high waves arose, as a precaution, Indonesia and Malaysia also issued a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn. The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported 138 aftershocks as of 11 a.m. local time. Their intensity ranged between 1.3 to 6.7. Experts say that such tremors can continue for several days. The Philippines, Indonesia and Japan fall in the ‘Ring of Fire’ of the Pacific Ocean. Earthquakes and volcanic activities often occur here. In October 2025, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Cebu, killing 69 people.
