America’s largest commuter railway system, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), has been completely closed since Saturday morning. The employees’ union has started a strike. This is the first major strike after 30 years. It is the LIRR’s first major strike since 1994.
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the busiest rail system in North America, connecting New York City and the eastern suburbs of Long Island. The unions began the strike after negotiations failed to reach a new agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
Union leaders say that inflation has increased a lot in the last three years. She had asked for a nice raise, but the MTA was offering less. “We regret that passengers are facing problems, but we just want proper wages,” said a picketing employee.
The LIRR connects areas of New York City and Long Island. Negotiations over wages and healthcare had been going on with the MTA for months, but an agreement could not be reached. Five unions, including locomotive engineers, machinists and signalmen, representing about 3,500 workers walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. Their main demand is salary increase. The unions demand that there should be a 5% salary increase in the fourth year. The MTA’s proposal is a 3% increase, with some lumpsum payments bringing the total up to 4.5%.
The MTA chairman said he had offered a substantial wage increase, but the union was already prepared to go on strike. New York Governor Kathy Hochul accused the Trump administration of ending the mediation early. Trump called it Hochul’s mistake.
If this situation continues for a long time, the economic and daily life of the New York region will be significantly affected. No date for new talks has been decided yet. There is distance between both the sides. In view of the upcoming Governor elections, an agreement can be reached soon, otherwise steps like fare increase or service cut can be taken.
