Doctors diagnosed him with congenital deafness due to a rare OTOF gene mutation.
Travis battling rare illness
At the age of 18 months, Travis was given a new gene therapy from the company Regeneron, which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Surgery was also done along with this therapy. After treatment, Travis’ hearing ability gradually returned. Now he can hear almost normally. He was 100 percent deaf, but he took this miracle drug, and now he can hear his mother, Sierra, saying, ‘I love you,’ the president cheered.
Sierra Smith later described how giving her child this drug, coupled with surgery, gave him the ability to listen to music.
