President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran had violated a ceasefire agreement with the US by attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated his threat to attack Iran’s energy infrastructure if it did not accept an agreement to end the war.
He posted on ‘Truth Social’, “Iran decided to open fire in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, this is a complete violation of our ceasefire agreement! This was not good, was it?”
He added, “We are offering a very fair and reasonable deal, and I hope they accept it, because if they don’t, the United States will destroy every single power plant and every single bridge in Iran, no longer being the ‘good guy’!”
His comments came as Iran effectively re-blocked the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, amid faltering diplomacy between the two sides. Iran attributed this to the US Navy’s ongoing blockade of Iranian ports; The move came just a day after it was announced that the waterway was “fully opened” under the ongoing ceasefire.
Trump said that Iran had targeted ships from France and the United Kingdom, although he did not provide any further details. Maritime officials said on Saturday that there was firing near Indian ships in this strait and something was thrown at them. Iranian state media confirmed that shots were fired near the two Indian ships to force them to return.
Representatives will go to Pakistan tomorrow
Trump further said that the negotiators will reach Islamabad, Pakistan on Monday evening. Direct talks between the two sides took place here last weekend, and the current two-week ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday.
Iranian officials said on Saturday that new US proposals were being reviewed, but there was no confirmation yet on the next round of talks.
