As Islamabad talks failed, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday called his Iranian counterpart Massoud Pezeshkian and said he was ready to help in talks to bring peace in the Middle East.
“Vladimir Putin stressed his readiness to further assist in the search for a political and diplomatic solution to this conflict, and to mediate in efforts to bring about a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,” the Kremlin said.
Was Russia supporting Iran in the Middle East war?
As the Iran war raged for weeks, many Western diplomats hinted that China and Russia may have an invisible role in the Middle East. Many were of the opinion that Russian spy networks might be helping Iran survive the war.
Russia and China also vetoed a UN Security Council resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. This motion could not be passed with 11 votes in favor, two against and two abstentions; And this came just hours before the 8 pm (Eastern Time) deadline previously set by US President Donald Trump.
After a 21-hour long session in Islamabad, the much-awaited talks between the US and Iran ended without any agreement. These talks, which aimed to establish a ceasefire and a new diplomatic roadmap, ultimately failed to produce any concrete results.
Addressing the press, Vance commented, “We’ve been working on this for 21 hours, and we’ve had many discussions with the Iranians; we haven’t been able to reach an agreement, and that’s more bad news for Iran than it is bad news for America.”
Vance said, “But the simple fact is that we need to see a positive commitment that they will not try to acquire nuclear weapons, and they will not try to acquire equipment that would enable them to rapidly build nuclear weapons,” adding that this remains “the main goal of the President of the United States.”
