Tehran attacked a power and water purification plant in Kuwait on Friday morning. At the same time, human rights activists have condemned these attacks on vital civilian infrastructure in the Gulf region.
Fatima Abbas Johar Hayat, spokeswoman for Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, said in a post on ‘X’ (previously Twitter) that the attack had caused extensive damage to parts of the plant. There is no news of any casualty in this attack.
The same day, Abu Dhabi’s media office reported that a gas facility in the city had been damaged by debris that fell during the interception of a missile. On Monday, a worker in Kuwait was killed in an Iranian attack on a plant producing electricity and water, the energy ministry said.
‘Immediately stop illegal attacks’
Following the US and Israeli attack on Tehran, several critical facilities were damaged by missiles fired by Iran at US allies in the Gulf region; These include ports, aluminum plants and water purification centres. Just last month, an Iranian drone damaged a water purification plant in Bahrain, local officials said.
These attacks could have devastating consequences for millions of civilians living in a region where fresh water is already in dire straits. About 10 crore people in the Gulf region depend on water desalination plants for clean drinking water.
Amnesty International has appealed to Iranian authorities to “immediately stop all unlawful attacks on energy infrastructure and water treatment facilities” in the Gulf region. “Water purification plants are vital to providing drinking water to millions of citizens in an arid region,” the international human rights group said in a statement issued on March 24.
The head of Iran’s army has warned that any US troops who come to attack will be sent “back to the Stone Age”. He said this in response to the threat given in President Donald Trump’s speech earlier this week.
Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi wrote on He further said, “Army commandos are fully prepared through years of rigorous training. The soil of Iran is a slaughterhouse for attackers; if you doubt it, try it.” America is accumulating thousands more troops in this area and is threatening to attack through land.
