US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran that if it does not open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, he will attack and destroy its power plants, starting with the largest plant.
In such a situation, the question is, which is the largest power plant of Iran? Let us know in detail.
three largest plants
Iran has about 110 gas plants, some of which are hybrid, according to data from OpenInfraMap, an open-source intelligence tool for research on energy infrastructure. According to this site, solar, hydro, wind, oil, diesel, coal, geothermal and nuclear plants also operate in the country.
The three largest plants in terms of production run on gas:
Damavand Combined Cycle Power Plant: It is located approximately 70 km south-east of Tehran city centre. Production: 2,868 MW.
Shahid Saleemi: It is located in the Mazandaran province, near the Caspian Sea. Production: 2,215 MW.
Shahid Razai: It is located approximately 110 km north-east of Tehran city centre. Production: 2,043 MW.
According to OpenInfraMap, Florida’s West County Energy Center is the largest operating natural gas power plant in the US, producing 3,750 MW.
Let us tell you that Iran produces most of its electricity from fossil fuels. According to data from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) website, in 2023, more than 340,000 GWh of electricity will come from these fuels, while about 28,000 GWh will come from renewable energy. According to the IAEA, Iran says it has only one operational nuclear power reactor, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in the west, and another under construction. In 2023, Iran plans to generate 5,740 GWh of electricity from nuclear energy.
What did Trump say?
Trump has given this warning to Iran through a post on the Truth Social platform. In it he wrote, “If Iran, within exactly 48 hours from now, without any further threats, does not completely open the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will attack their various power plants and completely destroy them.” Trump said that it will start with the largest plant.
