North Korea Election: Kim Jong Un’s party has got an overwhelming majority in the 2026 parliamentary elections in North Korea. According to state media outlet KCNA, the Workers’ Party of Korea and its allies received 99.93% of the votes in the Supreme People’s Assembly (Parliament) elections held on March 15, 2026. Kim Jong Un has won all 687 seats.
According to official figures, 99.99% of registered voters voted, only 0.0037% could not vote due to being abroad or working at sea and a mere 0.00003% abstained.
The special thing about this election is that 99.93% of those who voted supported the candidates, while 0.07% voted against it. The figure was unusually published in North Korean elections, as it marked the first time since 1957 that state media reported the opposition vote.
Such a massive victory is common in North Korea, but 99.99% voting against 0.07% voting is being discussed more on the internet. The dissenting votes immediately attracted public attention. People are reacting with sarcasm on social media. One user wrote, “Silence for 0.07%.” “Tell me the names of those 0.07% people,” another joked alongside Kim’s photo.
Under North Korea’s election laws, 687 representatives, including workers, farmers, intellectuals, service personnel and officials, were elected to the parliament. Only one candidate was in the fray from each constituency. Therefore, North Korea’s election process is called sham elections. Voters have to choose between yes or no, but saying no is considered too risky. For the first time since 1957, the state media accepted opposition votes in the elections for the Supreme People’s Assembly.
In this election, Kim Jong Un cast his vote in a coal mine, where he praised the young workers. Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong is also among the elected candidates.
