Iran has confirmed the death of its National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani. Top Iranian official Ali Larijani killed in US-Israel airstrike in Tehran. Along with Larijani, his son Morteza Larijani, office chief Alireza Bayat and several bodyguards were also killed in the attack. According to some reports, the attack took place at his daughter’s house in the suburbs of Tehran, while foreign media are also claiming that the attack took place during a meeting of the Basij Forces. Additionally, Basij Force commander Gholamreza Sulemani also died in the same attack.
Iran confirms Larijani’s death
The Iranian Supreme National Security Council issued a condolence message, saying, “The holy soul of Martyr Ali Larijani has been welcomed by the devout servants of God. He fought throughout his life for the Islamic Revolution and the progress of Iran and finally attained the status of martyrdom. Fulfilled his long-cherished desire, answered the divine call and received the privilege of martyrdom honorably on the front of service.”
Who was Ali Larijani?
Ali Larijani belonged to one of Iran’s most prestigious political families, often compared to America’s Kennedy family. His brother Sadek Larijani has been judiciary chief, while Mohammad Javad Larijani is a senior foreign policy adviser. After the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Israeli attack, Larijani’s name was at the forefront of the succession debate. However, Ayatollah’s son was later elected the supreme leader of Iran.
