Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike. According to reports, Ahmadinejad’s close aide and bodyguard were also killed in the attack. It is being said that the former President died when the building in Tehran where he was present was attacked by the Israeli Air Force.
Let us tell you that while serving as the sixth President of Iran between 2005 and 2013, Ahmadinejad is remembered as one of the most radical and anti-Semitic voices of the Islamic Republic. He spoke openly about his desire to destroy Israel. In 2009, his disputed re-election sparked the largest protests in post-revolution Iran’s history up to that time. The government led by him responded with bloodshed, killing dozens and sending hundreds to jail.
Iranian President Massoud Pejeshkian says the country’s armed forces will continue to work “with full force” to destroy enemy targets and “will frustrate the enemies as always.” In a televised statement on Sunday, Pejeshkian said Iran’s Temporary Leadership Council, of which he is a member, had begun its work.
Attack on another ship in the Strait of Hormuz
According to a British military agency, a second ship has been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Center said the attack occurred near Mina Saqr, United Arab Emirates. He said a projectile hit the ship, causing a fire. The fire has been extinguished and the ship will proceed on its way.
Earlier, another ship was also attacked in the Strait of Hormuz near Iran. The attacks come at a time when Iranian officials are reportedly threatening ships passing through the strait over the radio. One-fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the government news agency, one of the targets of the Israeli attacks on Tehran on Sunday was the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). An army hospital was also targeted, as were several positions of the Basij militia, which played a key role in suppressing protests in January.
The IRGC headquarters, known as Thar-Allah, was also attacked by Israeli missiles last June. It is a central command post that deals with major security incidents in the capital and operates under the direct supervision of the IRGC’s top command.
