Munich, Germany: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday criticized the UN for failing to resolve urgent global conflicts, citing the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. He praised American leadership in solving problems, and said that unlike the UN, the US has played a key role in resolving issues.
“We cannot ignore that today, on the most pressing matters facing us, it has no answers and has played almost no role,” he said. He further said that it did not resolve the war in Ukraine and that it was the US that could bring both sides to the table to discuss a peace deal.
‘Could not even resolve the war in Gaza’
He emphasized that it was the US, rather than international institutions, that successfully brought Russia and Ukraine to the table for high-stakes peace talks in late 2025 and early 2026. Rubio said he couldn’t even solve the war in Gaza, instead, it was the US that freed the prisoners from the beasts of Hamas.”
While acknowledging that the UN has tremendous potential for good, Rubio insisted that on the world’s most pressing issues, it has no answers and plays almost no role. Rubio’s remarks came amid larger discussions on the future of multilateral cooperation and the changing role of global governance institutions.
‘American B-2 bombers had to drop 14 bombs’
According to Israeli media reports, diplomats have expressed concern over US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative, which aims to resolve conflicts around the world, and said that it could harm the work of the UN. Rubio said that the UN is helpless in stopping the nuclear program of Tehran’s radical Shia clerics. For this, 14 bombs had to be dropped in a very precise manner from American B-2 bombers.
He also stressed America’s involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war and talks related to the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. He added, “We cannot allow those who openly threaten our citizens, and threaten our global stability, to hide behind the principles of international law that they themselves repeatedly violate.”
