Bangladesh Election 2026 Result : The results of the general elections held in Bangladesh on 12 February 2026 after a long time have brought a big change in the politics of the country. The election was the first major democratic vote since the student-led movement in 2024 that ousted the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to the Election Commission, the voting percentage stood at around 59-60%. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tarique Rahman has won. These elections held in Bangladesh were very important for the country, as it was the first major election after the 2024 student movement. Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in that movement and she came to India.

Main parties and coalitions

This time the Awami League did not contest the elections, so the old fight between the two big parties is over. This time there was a direct contest between two alliances.

  • Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP): This is a right wing party. It is led by Khaleda Zia’s son Tariq Rehman. He made a comeback after 17 years in December 2025. BNP has formed an alliance of 10 parties.
  • Jamaat-e-Islami (JIB): This is an Islamic party. It is being led by Shafiqur Rahman. He has formed an alliance of 11 parties, which also includes the National Citizen Party (NCP). NCP has been formed by the youth of the 2024 student movement. Both these alliances were earlier together against Hasina, but now have contested the elections separately.

What were the main results?

The Election Commission (EC) released the election results on Friday, showing that the BNP has so far won 209 seats out of the 297 declared. Jamaat-e-Islami got 68 seats, National Citizen Party (NCP) got 6 seats. Rest of the small parties and independent candidates have got 7-14 seats.

BNP has got more than two-thirds majority. Tariq Rehman, son of BNP leader and Zia-ur-Rehman’s daughter Khaleda Zia, is poised to become the next prime minister.

who won?

Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League was not allowed to contest the elections. She was completely left out and couldn’t find a seat. The National Citizen Party (NCP), formed out of the 2024 student movement, got only 6 seats, much less than expected. Jamaat-e-Islami got a chance to become the second largest party, but they will also remain in the main opposition.

BNP leader Tariq Rahman won from two seats Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6. Prominent leaders like Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Salahuddin Ahmed have also won the elections. Jamaat-e-Islami also performed well, with Shafiqur Rahman winning from Dhaka-15. NCP’s Nahid Islam reached Parliament from Dhaka-11.

What was special in the election?

This time the voting percentage was around 60%. The elections are being described as the most peaceful and credible in many years, but some parties have alleged manipulation and engineering of the results. A referendum was also held in which the July Charter (amendment of the Constitution) was approved by more than 60% of the people. There are changes like greater participation of women, tenure limit and expansion of rights.

What will happen next?

Now BNP will form a new government in Bangladesh. Tariq Rehman can become the Prime Minister of the country. The party decided not to take out any victory rally, but invited prayers in mosques. Improving law and order will be the biggest challenge for BNP.
