New Delhi: After its landslide victory in the 13th National Parliament elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has thanked India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory message to party chief Tariq Rahman.

Speaking at the Election Commission Secretariat in Dhaka, BNP’s Poll Coordination Committee Chief Nazrul Islam Khan said the party welcomes Modi’s words and looks forward to stronger ties with India. Khan said, “We also thank him on behalf of our party and believe that under the leadership of our leader Tariq Rehman, the relations between our two countries and the people of these two countries will strengthen.”

In a message posted on Twitter, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Rehman and stressed the importance of bilateral relations. PM Modi said, “It was a great pleasure to speak to Tariq Rahman. I congratulated him on his landslide victory in the Bangladesh elections. I extended my good wishes and support to him in his endeavor to fulfill the expectations of the people of Bangladesh. As two close neighbours, who share deep historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of both countries.”

BNP got more than 210 seats, of which it won 209 seats alone, thereby ensuring its majority in Parliament. The victory made Tariq Rahman the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh, ending the Awami League’s nearly two decades of dominance. Let us tell you that there is a possibility that Tariq Rehman may take oath as PM tomorrow.
