French President Emmanuel Macron on Donald Trump tariff: President Donald Trump has again dropped tariff bombs on many countries amid efforts to include Greenland in the US. He announced imposition of 10 percent tariff on 8 European countries for not supporting the Greenland dispute. French President Emmanuel Macron refused to bow to Trump’s threats. He has clearly said that no threat or pressure can influence us.

Trump has imposed a 10 percent tariff on 8 European countries opposing him on the Greenland issue. This includes Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom (Britain), Netherlands, Finland. Not only this, he also talked about increasing the tariff to 25% if there is no agreement for the complete purchase of Greenland by June.

No threat or pressure will affect us – Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron responded to these threats of the US President. “France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of countries in Europe and other parts of the world. This guides our decisions. This is the basis of our commitment to the United Nations and its Charter. It is on this basis that we support Ukraine and will continue to do so, and we have created a coalition of countries seeking a strong and lasting peace to safeguard these principles and our security,” he said in a post on Twitter.

He added, “It is on this basis that we decided to participate in exercises hosted by Denmark in Greenland. We take full responsibility for this decision, because security is at stake in the Arctic and on our outer shores of Europe. When we face such situations, no amount of threats or pressure will sway us – neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world.”

Macron said clearly that tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. If these are confirmed, European countries will respond in a united and coordinated manner. We will ensure that European sovereignty is maintained. It is in this spirit that I will hold talks with my European partners.

Imposing tariffs is completely wrong – British PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized Trump’s decision. He said, “Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlandic people and the Danish people. We have also been clear that Arctic security matters to the whole of NATO and that all allies must do more together to counter the threat posed by Russia in different parts of the Arctic.”

Starmer further said that it is completely wrong to impose tariffs on NATO allies for the sake of their collective security. We will definitely take up this matter directly with the US administration.

Trump announced tariffs

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said in a post on Saturday, January 17 that world peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland and Denmark can’t do anything about it. He announced that starting February 1, 2026, a 10% tariff will be charged on any goods shipped to the US from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. The tariff will be increased to 25% on June 1, 2026. This tariff will have to be paid until a deal is reached for the entire purchase of Greenland.
