US President Donald Trump has taken to social media to express his views on the recent protests in Iran, and issued a stern warning saying that America is fully prepared.
This comes after mass protests in Iran’s capital Tehran over economic problems have left at least seven people dead.
What did Trump say?
Trump posted on Truth Social, “If Iran shoots at peaceful protesters and kills them violently, which is their habit, the United States will come to their aid. We are locked, loaded, and ready to go. Thank you for bringing attention to this matter! President Donald J. Trump.”
How did the protests start?
The protests, which initially began due to economic concerns, have also seen protesters oppose Iran’s theocratic government.
Let us tell you that the country’s leaders have still not recovered from the 12-day war launched against them by Israel in June. During this conflict, the US also targeted Iranian nuclear sites. Iran has announced it has stopped uranium enrichment at all its sites, signaling a possible willingness to negotiate with the West over its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
However, these talks have not yet started, with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning Tehran against restarting its nuclear program.
Demonstrations spread to rural provinces of the country
On Thursday, protests spread to rural provinces of the country. According to officials’ reports, at least seven people, including security forces and protesters, were killed, the first deaths in these protests.
The deaths may signal a more aggressive response by Iran’s theocratic government to the protests, which have slowed in Tehran but have intensified in other areas. The deaths, two on Wednesday and five on Thursday, occurred in four cities, mainly populated by people from Iran’s Lur ethnic group.
These are the most significant protests seen in Iran since 2022, when nationwide demonstrations began following the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. However, the current protests have not yet reached the same level or intensity as those that followed the death of Amini, who authorities say was arrested for not wearing a hijab.
