New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday became the butt of jokes at a high-profile Gaza peace summit in Washington. He praised US President Donald Trump tremendously, which was not liked by the netizens.
Shehbaz Sharif, instead of paying attention to the scheduled talks, appeared intent on praising Donald Trump, calling him a “man of peace” and a “savior” for South Asia.
Sharif said, “Your timely and very effective intervention in achieving ceasefire between India and Pakistan probably saved millions of lives.” He further said, “You have truly proven to be a man of peace. And I want to say that you are truly the savior of South Asia.”
Online debate broke out
Sharif’s speech sparked a major online debate, which drew sharp reactions from social media users. Many ridiculed the excessive praise, while others questioned the appropriateness of using such strong language for a foreign head of state.
The release of the video immediately sparked a wave of online protest, with mockery, suspicion and anger across platforms.
One person wrote, “Messiah of South Asia ❌ Messiah of Pakistan GDP ✅”
Another user commented, “Messiah? This is the guy who destroys your family and then asks you if you need help”
Critics were quick to criticize Shehbaz Sharif’s tone, with one user saying “This is so shameful.”
Another said: “Shameless human being”
Strange conversation between Trump and Sharif
While the purpose of the first meeting of the Board of Peace at the Donald Trump Institute of Peace was to ratify the $7 billion Gaza relief package, much of the attention on the internet was on the very warm, but very awkward conversation between Donald Trump and Shehbaz Sharif.
In perhaps the most shocking moment of the summit, Trump turned to the podium, with PM Sharif standing nearby, and claimed that he had personally prevented a war between India and Pakistan in May 2025.
Trump boasted that he had threatened to impose 200% trade tariffs on both countries, adding, “When it came to losing a lot of money, he said, I guess we don’t want to fight.”
