Military tension has once again increased in the Middle East region. The US Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its entire strike group entered the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area on Monday. These warships have been deployed from the Indo-Pacific region amid rising tensions with Iran, leading to speculation that President Donald Trump may soon order air strikes on Tehran.
The US has increased pressure in Iran following nationwide protests since late December and a harsh crackdown by the administration of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Trump administration has taken a tough stance on Iranian methods of suppressing these protests. Last week, Trump said, “We have a huge fleet going in that direction. We may not have to use it, but it’s a precaution.” From this statement, both the show of power and the uncertainty of possible attacks appear to be part of the strategy.
Trump has already warned Iran
Earlier, Trump had issued a clear warning that if Iran hanged or murdered the protesters, it would face military action. He later claimed that Tehran had stopped the proposed execution of more than 800 prisoners, although Iran flatly rejected this. With the deployment of the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group, the Pentagon has sent additional fighter planes, military cargo flights and other resources to the region, multiplying the US military presence around Iran.
The full force of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group
This strike group of the US Navy is an integral part of Carrier Strike Group-3 (CSG-3), whose flagship is USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). On 19 January this group had crossed the Strait of Malacca. US Centcom shared a post on social media saying that this deployment has been done to strengthen regional security and stability.
The structure of the group is as follows
Aircraft Carrier: 1 – USS Abraham Lincoln (nuclear-powered, one of the largest warships in the world weighing more than 1 lakh tons). 70-90 fighter aircraft of Carrier Air Wing-9 (CVW-9) are deployed in it.
Guided-Missile Destroyers: 3-4 (Arleigh Burke-class, such as USS Michael Murphy, USS Spruance, USS Frank E. Peterson Jr.). These are capable of air defence, anti-submarine warfare and ground attacks.
Cruiser: Sometimes 1 (Ticonderoga-class).
Submarines: 1-2 (Virginia or Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine). These can track enemy ships and fire Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Support Ship: 1-2 (e.g. UNS Cesar Chavez – carrying fuel, ammunition and supplies).
Destroyer SquadronThis entire group, including 21 ships, provides Trump with many military options to put pressure on Iran.
Iran’s stern warning
Iran has given a sharp statement on American deployment. Tehran has issued a clear warning that any aggressive step will be given a befitting reply. Regional experts believe that this tension could now escalate towards a broader war, especially if Trump decides to intervene directly in the name of supporting the protests. The eyes of the international community are focused on this military movement to restore peace in the Middle East.
